Translators missed the human touch. “Translators are their own worst enemy. They could ditch agencies and earn more money. But they miss the human interaction,” Nielsen said. “All of these startups are trying to force a behavior change in a very conservative space, where people are very used to being pampered with human interactions.” Nielsen also thinks translation just does not rank high enough on the list of corporate problems to make it ripe for real disruption. “Translation is not among the top three problems for many companies,” she said.
Expert Systems recently entered into a partnership with Google to add the Cogito layer to the Google Search Appliance, providing search features available even for offline use. Selling search to Google, no mean feat. If you buy Google Search Appliance, you can have also the Cogito layer that is able to read, understand, categorize information, and helps Google Search Appliance to better understand the content that the system is indexing,” Spaggiari elaborated.
Katie Atkinson, head of the University of Liverpool’s Department of Computer Science, caused a stir at a recent conference of lawyers by revealing the success of an experiment in judging cases with AI. She said that over "a body of case law" covering 32 previous cases, the computerised algorithm had a 96% success rate, getting only one case wrong. She added that the technique could become a decision support tool to help make judges reasoning “faster, more efficient and consistent”.
People around the world prefer communicating in their native tongue. That fact will drive the language industry to US$40 billion in revenue for 2016. To support this growth, language service and technology providers are extending their repertoire beyond basic translation, localization, and interpreting to embrace their clients' global content strategy. They are offering new services, building new tools, and linking their processes and technology with that of their customers to provide better, faster, and more reliable products and services.
Danuta Hübner, the head of the European Parliament’s Constitutional Affairs Committee (AFCO), warned Monday that English will not be one of the European Union’s official languages after Britain leaves the EU. English is one of the EU’s 24 official languages because the U.K. identified it as its own official language, Hübner said. But as soon as Britain completes the process to leave the EU, English could lose its status.

Filmmaker Oscar Sharp and technologist Ross Goodwin have been collaborating for a couple of years now, exploring the boundaries of computer-generated creativity, using ML to write a script. Goodwin: "For me this technology is about pushing fiction forward into a new domain, where we get stories that we really haven't seen before, because so much of what comes out of Hollywood and so much that we read are the same stories, recycled over and over again. And I feel like this technology can give us access to storytelling that might be a little beyond what we've experienced in the past."
Spence Green, CEO of Lilt (US). "This (large localisation project into 6 languages) was the first time ever that teams of translators were training an MT system collectively, interactively and in real-time. The project proved that auto-adaptive machine translation technology is ready for large-scale production use."
There are two industries in particular where the stakes of accurate and quality translation are particularly high - life sciences and financial services. In financial services, the implications of reporting mistakes are extremely costly, not only with regulatory fines, but also with reputational risk. In life sciences, the stakes are arguably even higher where errors in dosage instructions and regulatory documents can potentially lead to loss of human life.

The multi language tool rolled out for Pages earlier this year and now Facebook intends to port it to regular accounts. Facebook says there are currently 5,000 pages using the function regularly and they receive some 70 million views daily, and of these views, 25 million are viewed in one of the post’s secondary languages. By any metric, that’s 25 million people who likely wouldn’t have been reached otherwise.
In our new research, we used linguistic cues to compare tens of thousands of emails pre-identified as lies with those known to be truthful. And from this comparison, we developed a text analytic algorithm that can detect deception. It works on three levels.
