Facebook Starts Own MT System for 800M Users a Month

Facebook is now serving 2 billion text translations per day. Facebook can translate across 40 languages in 1,800 directions, like French to English. And 800 million users, almost half of all Facebook users, see translations each month.

That’s all based on Facebook’s own machine learning translation system. In 2011 it started working with Microsoft Bing to power translations, but has since bene working to transition to its own system. In December 2015, Facebook finally completed the shift, and now exclusively uses its own translation tech.

GoButler Launches Angel.ai to Sell #NLProc Tech to Third Parties

GoButler (US) is shuttering the GoButler consumer-facing service altogether in favour of offering natural language processing technology to third-parties. Angel.ai is based on the same NLP technology that previously powered GoButler’s “fully-automated” flight search and discovery, and will enable commerce companies to build ‘conversational’ user interfaces, such as Facebook Messenger chat bots, or other kinds of natural language search.

How SyntaxNet Could Improve Chatbots

Internally, Google combines its natural-language system with a database of semantic information called the Knowledge Graph. This allows it to recognize particular objects, people, places, and other concepts and respond accordingly. The system is also often able to correctly classify new words by comparing them with other words that appear in a similar context. So far, the technology works for 15 languages.

Using Cognitive Computing to Bring Back Ancestor Languages & Predict Future Developments

“Our statistical model can be used to answer scientific questions about languages over time, not only to make inferences about the past, but also to extrapolate how language might change in the future,” says Tom Griffiths, associate professor of psychology, director of the Computational Cognitive Science Lab, and another co-author of the paper. The discovery helps makes sense of big data and uses new technology to document and maintain endangered languages as critical resources for preserving cultures and knowledge. For example, researchers plan to use the same computational model to reconstruct indigenous North American proto-languages.
