WhatsApp: German Language or Fines

Two years ago Germany’s Federation of Consumer Protection Offices took WhatsApp to court for failing to publish its terms and conditions in German (although the rest of its website had been translated into German).  It also said that the company only gave email as a way for consumers to contact the company.  The courts decided against WhatsApp in 2014 – the company then decided to appeal. WhatsApp has now lost the appeal and faces a fine of up to €250,000 if it fails to translate its terms and conditions.

Instagram to Add In-App #MachineTranslation 

Instagram will soon start translating comments, captions posted alongside its pictures, and user bios. The image-sharing social network announced that it would be adding the feature in the coming month, automatically translating comments and descriptions to the user's chosen language. Text will be machine translated from the original language to the language selected in the user's app settings, and will be visible by tapping a new "see translation" option under comments and captions.

Filmmaker Oscar Sharp and technologist Ross Goodwin have been collaborating for a couple of years now, exploring the boundaries of computer-generated creativity, using ML to write a script. Goodwin: "For me this technology is about pushing fiction forward into a new domain, where we get stories that we really haven't seen before, because so much of what comes out of Hollywood and so much that we read are the same stories, recycled over and over again. And I feel like this technology can give us access to storytelling that might be a little beyond what we've experienced in the past."

Maluuba's Machine Literacy Model Scores High on CBT and CNN Dataset Tests

Maluuba, a Canadian deep-learning company helping machines think, reason and communicate with human-like intelligence, has scored the highest results to date on the premier machine comprehension benchmarks: Facebook's CBT (Children's Book Test) dataset and Deepmind's CNN dataset. Maluuba's model achieved leading scores of 67.4 percent and 74.0 percent accuracy on the respective datasets, surpassing top results from leaders in the academic Natural Language Processing (NLP) community including Facebook, Google and IBM Watson.

European LSPs Predict Growth of €20B for the Translation Industry

A survey of Europe’s language service providers (LSPs) indicates optimism for further expansion of the sector (currently worth more than €20 billion), with respondents indicating that they are 2.5 times more likely to expand their business either locally or internationally than sell and leave the sector*. The poll was commissioned jointly by the European Union of Associations of Translation Companies (EUATC), the Globalization and Localization Association (GALA), the European Language Industry Association (ELIA) and the European Commission’s European Master’s in Translation program (EMT) and its Language Industry Web Platform (LINDweb) project.

Findo Raises $3M to Support Natural Language Queries

Findo (US, AI startup) has raised $3M million and launched its first product to help people find information buried in documents, files, email attachments, and more. For example, while a user can search by specific keywords they know are included in file names or subject headings, Findo also uses natural language processing (NLP) to understand a very general search query such as “phone number of that guy I met in London” or “PDF sent by Jonathan last Thursday.”
